Particularly if given in childhood; a diagnostic label given with regard to a mental health issue/disorder tends to stick with the person. Identifying the person as they"re the disorder i. e. calling ppl w/ schizophrenia schizophrenics/schizos. Mental health, we tend to identify person w. disorder. If the diagnosis is accurate/inaccurate, usually the treatment works, more likely to be successful/won"t work. Required for treatment in the us and canada. Insured systems won"t pay for treatment unless there"s a diagnosis. Strong movement to eliminate the word retarded b/c of the stigmatization associated with the label. To categorize disorder w. specific and distinct symptoms, which is not easy b/c there are a lot of symptom overlap. The disorder have separate distinct symptoms, groups of symptoms are known as syndromes. Syndrome son the diagnostic systems occur in categories.
