Document Summary

Neurophysiology of pitch: temporal coding: auditory nerve synchronizes with frequency of sound, lateral auditory cortex neurons may respond to pitch. A1 vs v1: at the single-neuron level of organization, v1 computes novel properties such as orientation, motion, binocular disparity. Olfaction: the sense of smell our most primal sense = detection and recognition of chemicals that contact the membranes inside the nose, smell and memory are closely linked. If odor is associated with experience, a smell can recall the memory; smell is better at this memory cue effect than all the other senses: whole memories, complete with all associated emotions, can be prompted by smell. This is entirely unconscious and cannot necessarily be prompted voluntarily: olfaction = innate we appear to have an innate ability to detect bad, aversive smells. One-day old babies give facial expressions that indicate rejection when given fish or rotten egg odor.
