Autonomy: feeling authentic; that our behaviours are freely chosen and in line with our own wishes. Competence: feeling accomplished; good at things we strive to be good at. More recently though, people are focusing more on how romantic partners can help us reach these 3 fundamental needs including them being responsive. Perceived partner responsiveness it doesn"t matter how responsive the partner actually is, it is the fact we perceive the partner to be responsive that is important. The partner only needs to think that the partner is fulfilling their needs. If the partner is responsive it makes one. Making the partner feel cared for (making them feel they are being listened to, with their best interest at heart)
