When conflicting signals: we attend more to non-verbal language. You don"t try to deliberately convey this information but it still provides information to process how close you are with someone. Lots of ways to regulate interactions with ppl that"s difficult to do verbally. We send subtle nonverbal signals (indirect communication) helps for smooth flow of interaction i. e. at a party, am i allowed to join this conversation, you"ll look for nonverbal cues. Two variables for how ppl signal intimacy: nonverbal involvement, positive affect, both together signs intimacy showing you"re engaged to another person and that you"re actively involved (paying attention and showing enthusiasm) Proxemics: physically embodying more closeness to that person, match horizontal plane (the picture on the side)
