PSY320H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Gordon Allport
Document Summary
Psy320 lecture 1: introduction - attitudes and persuasion. Maybe not because attitude changed but because environment changed. The essential feature of attitude is a preparation or readiness for response. Not behavior, but the precondition of behavior. If we know someone"s attitudes we can know their general tendencies. When activated we will act in a certain way that we"ve acted in before. A mental or neural state of readiness, organized through experience, exerting a directive influence upon the individual"s response to all objects and situations with which it is related. Readiness, an activation so we can do something similar to what we did before. A memory for something is a certain cascading effect of neurons that"s almost the same as last time which is why we don"t necessarily act the same exact way as last time. Organized through experience - think of how you acted with something as a kid vs. how you did recently, will be very different with experience.
