Another feature of cocaine, in addition to stimulant properties, is that it blocks sodium channels in high doses, which leads to numbness. The way it"s taken today, unlike previous times which was drinking, is either snorting, smoking (if converted into crack). Historically crack has been less expensive than powdered cocaine (associated with rich people). So less jail sentence if you have powdered cocaine than crack.
