Document Summary

This class: chapters 9, 10: no class next week. Sound properties: auditory system anatomy and function, intensity, loudness, hearing loss, sound localization. Sound is thus the propagation of pressure changes in the air. This wave propagates through --> no air actually moves though. Example: speed of sound through air is about 340 meters/second, but speed of sound through water is 1500 meters/second. 5 times faster in water because of the higher density of water. Light travels a million times faster than sound. Frequency: for sound, the number of times per second that a pattern of pressure repeats. Hertz (hz): a unit of measure for frequency. Amplitude: the magnitude of displacement of a sound pressure wave. Intensity: the amount of sound energy falling on a unit area.
