Document Summary

Imagery: mental representation of something that isn"t currently present. Tend to assume imagery is visual, but have imagery in other modalities. Different than symbolic representation (arbitrary mental representation of concept) Can be schematic or abstract concept knowledge. Everything can be represented verbally but not everything can be represented as an image. E. g. can describe a cat, easier to picture but can describe freedom, hard to picture. All images are represented as spatial representations. All images are epiphenomena of underlying propositional networks, stored as propositions. E. g. memorize map, mentally scan til you get to windmill/lighthouse. When we form mental images, analogous to real objects. Support for propositions usually involve relatively complex objects and/or require us to assign meaning to percept. Able to use analogous images and propositions, both affect memory. Concreteness effect: imagery likely plays a role. Propositional and functional equivalence theories are both representational however. Evidence for functional equivalence can be used to support embodied cognition view of knowledge.
