Document Summary
Memory allows us to encode and store information so that we can retrieve it later in time when we need it. The amount of information we can encode at a time seems to be limited. Some information allows more efficient encoding than other information. Atkinsons and shiffrin"s modal model of memory (1968) The modal model places sensory and short-term memory at the beginning of the process of memory. This model proposed three types of memory: sensory memory: large capacity, decays quickly over time, susceptible to interference. Is an initial stage that holds all incoming information for seconds or a fraction of a second. Holds 5 to 7 items for 15 to 20 seconds. System involved in storing small amounts of information for a brief period of time: long term memory: massive capacity, inactive and durable storage can hold a large amount of information for years or even decades. Rehearsal: repeating a stimulus over and over, operates on short term memory.
