TA IS LECTURING AGAIN:
Perceiving and Taking Action:
So far, we’ve taken a “sitting in a chair” approachDo not understand him or his
notes.Movement helps us perceive objects more accuratelyKnowledge driven perception
“Top-Down” may lead us to assume this a fairly normal sculpture of a horse.
The interaction of perception and action. There are three distinct psychological processes.
Despite the complexity, occurs automatically. So in a cup of a coffee: perceive cup, reach for
cup, grasp cup.
The physiology of perception and Action:
Where/how and what pathways of the brainEarly work on brain physiology 0 brain ablation
and neuropsychology.More recent work in cognitive neuroscience fMRI, MEG, EGG, and PET
scans
Perception and Action Streams:D.F. suffered temporal lobe damage from carbon monoxide
poisoning.
Could not orient hand to slot in orientation task But completed “mail the letter task” without
issue.
Therefore, issue with the perception pathway but not action pathway.
Picking up a coffee and other behaviors:
Perception and Action involve two separate pathways:Therefore, the perception and action
streams of picking up the cup. Identify the cup (Perception or where pathway)Reach for the
cup (Action or what pathway)Position fingers to grasp (Action pathway)Lift the cup (action
pathway)
Therefore, perception is a dynamic process. Where perception meets memory:
Memories often have a significant sensory component. What happens when we perceive
something and later remember it?Single cells recordings in severe epilepsy patients:In one
patient saw many clips including a clip of The Simpsons Hippocampal cell firing rate increased
when asked to remember the Simpsons
Imagery:
Propositional vs image-based representations:
Propositional representations:
Some thoughts/concepts are clearly non-imagery based: justice, democracy, even numbers,
mammals.
Psychologists represent this variety of thought using propositional networks.
Propositions are amodal: they represent information in a way that is independent of any
sensory modality.
Propositions are arbitrary or symbolic: the structure of the representation is unrelated to the
structure of the represented object.
Propositional theories of mental imagery argue that the experience of seeing an image in our
mine’s eye epiphenomenal: it is the consequence of our cognition but does not contribute to it.
So seeing images in our mind when asked a cognitive question is just sort of smoke it isn’t what
actually allows us to answer questions. Images are just a by product.
Image-based representations:
