Document Summary
On a continuum of closed open. Ex. learning to high jump (take x # of steps, then lean back and kick: must stand y number of meters away, b/c the x number of steps require that much space. Change the closed movements depending on context. Ex. high jump: little variations in the # of meters away don"t matter that much. Can alter the movement instantaneously for the situation. Skills start off as closed movements practice become open. Cognitive skills: patterns of thought that help in problem-solving / application of strategies. Math: see square roots multiply by the conjugate (a pattern of problem-solving, cognitive stage, performance is based on verbalized rules, uses mostly conscious thought, requiring lots of brain power. Associative stage: actions become stereotyped (grouped, a few movements become done in conjunction (chunking) Autonomous stage: movement seems automatic not really consciously thinking, little to no cognitive effort.
