It is the understanding of human behaviour through the scientific study of the mind. The classical period: plato was a nativist. When he thought about the mind, he believed people were born with some innate abilities. He believed reality resided in representations within each individual mind: aristotle was an empiricist. He believed that we were made to learn and that reality lies in the concrete. Early beginnings: rene descartes was a nativist and rationalist. He believed that all understanding came through logic. He was known for saying, i think therefore i am, which introduced his concept of dualism. The mind and body are separate things as we can think about the mind it is nonphysical: john locke was an english philosopher and an empiricist. He believed you could infer through the senses. Locke also believed that humans were born with a blank slate", with no innate abilities/knowledge and that experience throughout life made a person into who they are.
