Document Summary
Diagnosis most contentious issue in the field-due to misdiagnosis able to occur. Helps us select a treatment--misdiagnosis obviously results in mistreatment. Assessment is always ongoing in order to see if treatment is working. Atypical (have the disorder but it is not necessarily exhibiting the correct symptoms-treat anyway for the diagnosis and will see if treatment works in order to confirm diagnosis) Diagnosis can be harmful ex: schizophrenia diagnosis leads to stigma-we tend to label them as their disorder. Mental illnesses-label still tends to stick after symptoms go away. Overdiagnosis can occur-due to wanting work from diagnostician. Dsm diagnosis, if one denies the diagnosis, that is another diagnosis. Problem is that there is a lot of symptom overlap which can cause misdiagnosis. Dsm: diagnostic and statistical manual-not very statistical however. Used mainly in north america, and parts of europe. Developed by american psychiatric association, done in conjunction with psychologists. Developed by the world health organization, division of the u. n.
