Document Summary
People want to grow not just keep at a balance. We want and are almost always desiring something. Motivation (reduction of tension by satisfying deficit states or lack, comes out of d-need, aka deficiency needs, physiological survival or safety like food, rest, shelter. Our actions seek to reduce their drives) versus metamotivation (growth tendencies and entails b-needs, aka being needs. They are drives for self-actualization and to fulfill ones" potential. They push forward and do not stem from a deficiency. Motivation and d-needs take precedence over metamotivation and b-needs. The hierarchy of needs (based on principle of relative potency) has five basic needs: If these are not fulfilled an organism cannot simply move on to fulfill others and these become more pressing. 2: safety needs = requirements for orderly, stable and predictable world. 3: belonging and love needs = seeking for affection and intimate relationships with others. These are more difficult to meet in our technological, fluid and mobile society.
