Document Summary

Long term memory requires no attention in order to keep it, but when it is given attention it can come back to your consciousness. Spotlight of attention : what it doesn"t shine on stays in the dark, fades into oblivion, most of your environment is not remembered, sensory memory system processes things you don"t even realize, captures pretty much everything. Sensory memory: a memory system that momentarily preserves extremely accurate images of sensory information. Info that is not quickly passed to short term memory is gone forever. Sensory memory is brief: dot thing, and then numbers/numbers try to remember what it said. Iconic memory was demonstrated in sperling"s classis experiment (exposure=1/20 of a second) and lasts about 1/3 of a second: echoic memory (lasts about 2 seconds sure i was listening ) Iconic and echoic memory system may allow is to experience the world as a continuous stream.
