Document Summary
Sensations features of the environment like electromagnetic wavelengths of light or changes in air pressure, that we use to create an understanding of the world. The sensations are transduced/translated by sensory system into electrochemical language of the brain. The brain takes the message combining it with previous experiences to create a perception. Bottom-up processing neural processing that starts with the physical messages or sensations. Top-down processing combine the neural organization with our understanding of the world to interpret and organize the information into something that has value. Perception is created by these processes working together. Figure-ground highlights one fundamental way we organize information; one thing stands out from the rest. Laws of gestalt/ the gestalt principles of organization outline some ways we see the world. Principle of proximity states that objects close to one another will be grouped together. Principle of similarity states that objects physically similar to one another will be grouped together.
