Document Summary

We are always engaging in manipulative top down processing whether we like it or not. We are manipulating ourselves implicitly all the time. Much of persuasion is learning how to pull the triggers that already exist in most people through socialization processes. This same principle can be applied to psychological disorders (more specifically in mood disorders). You can get people to engage in behaviours that otherwise their psyche wouldn"t allow through gradual escalation process. Commitment and consistency principle (the foot-in-the-door technique) - you ask people to do something and they generally say yes, then without realizing it they have already started to subtly manipulate themselves. They start to see themselves as a social/helpful person- so they are more likely to say yes to the next thing and on. Beach thieves" study- in the controlled condition people just lie down on the beach with their towels surrounded by their belongings, and then they get up and leave.
