Social psychology: the scientific study of the effects of social and cognitive processes on the way individuals perceive, influence, and relate to others. Attributions: people"s causal explanations for why events or actions occur. Personal attributions: explanations that refer to internal characteristics such as abilities, traits, moods, and effort. Situational attributions: explanations that refer to external events, such as weather, luck, accidents, or the actions of others. The fundamental attribution error: the tendency for people to overemphasize personal factors and underestimate situational factors in explaining the behaviour of others.
