Document Summary
Cognetive pyschologists want to measure reaction time. Cognitive psychology sees the individual as a processor of information, in much the same way that a computer takes in information and follows a program to produce an output. Reaction time used to measure the speed of cognitive processes. As soon as the object appears to your sense : start time. Say word (stimulus: hits auditory processing encoding, quickly compare to stored info, decide (yes/no, respond actually say yes/no. When we respond to a stimulus, the time it takes is determined by the processing steps that information must flow through to accomplish the task. We can measure how long it takes for one of the stages by removing it. We first measure how long it takes to do the whole thing, and then without. A demonstration of interference in the reaction time of a task. A highly rehearsed skill that takes no attention. Takes more attention, is slow, is effortful.
