Document Summary
Consciousness: a multi level process: neurochemical/cellular: neurotransmitters and neurons, neuroanatomical: major brain structures and their organization, physiological: major contributions of physiological systems; eg, autonomic, nevous system, hormones, social. Receive information from other neurons and transmit towards the cell body. Fire or not, send info or not. Needs to receive many excitatory signals in comparison to inhibitory signals in order to do something. Wait for chemicals to come along and get taken into receptor site: cell body. Keeps the neuron alive and determines whether it will fire. Electrical regulation b/c of ion concentration difference across cell membrane (net ive inside) Excitatory signals decrease net negative charge. Cell must depolarize (less ive charge) to threshold point (-40 - 55 mv) Ions flood into axon, depolarizes next axon, more ions flood in : axon. Long fiber that conducts impulses away from the cell body. Succession of ion channels opening and closing.
