Document Summary
Most common brachial artery (in your arm: listen to the sounds produced, when the cuff pressure > artery pressure, as the pressures even out have different characteristic sounds. Pulse: the pressure wave of circulating blood. Can be monitored at pressure points (where pulse is easily pulpated) As a function of systolic & diastolic blood pressure: 2/3 of time: in resting state (diastole) [diastolic p + 1/3(systolic p - diastolic p)] As a function of cardiac output & resistance: Cardiac output: regulates the volume that enters the vessel: mainly affected by stroke volume volume of the container = fixed, the amount of mass in the container determines pressure. Arteriole resistance: regulates the volume that leaves the vessel. It"s much easier to pump blood into the system, than to take it out: heart = muscle, venous drainage = passive draining, therefore stroke volume = biggest regulator of map. Autonomic ns exerts control only on the arteries.
