Document Summary
Functions: transportation of substances to tissues, remove metabolic by-products, adjustment of oxygen & nutrient supply in different physiologic states, regulation of body temperature, humoral (immune & hormonal) communication. Closed loop, with 2 pumps working in series. Pulmonary circuit: right ventricle pulmonary valve, pulmonary trunk, pulmonary arteries, lungs, pulmonary veins, left atrium mitral valve. Systemic circuit: left ventricle aortic valve, aorta, arterioles & capillaries (widely branched, vena cava, right atrium tricuspid valve, right ventricle. Pericardium: encasing of the heart: fluid-filled b/w pericardium & heart, prevents scraping of the myocardium. Ventricles: large muscles of the heart generate pumping: at the apex to allow for pumps to be generated from the bottom, upwards and outwards of the heart. Atria (right & left atrium): location where blood is received into the heart. Superior vena cava: receives deoxygenated blood from systemic circuit. Aorta: sends blood out via systemic circuit. Pulmonary artery: sends deoxygenated blood out to pulmonary circuit.
