Document Summary

Definition: bacterial infection, that causes inflammation of the meninges (outer layer coverings of your brain) Seizures: set barriers against pathogens & destroy pathogens, detect & kill abnormal cells, remove cellular debris, parasitic worms (in intestines, fungi (yeast infection, protozoa (parasites in the blood, bacteria, virus (use host machinery to replicate) Comprised of: dna / rna (ie genetic information, protein coat, lipid envelope (sometimes, proteins specific for targeted hosts (sometimes) Functions: return excess tissue fluid to blood, transport fat from digestive system to blood, transport pathogens / dendritic cells to lymph nodes. Dendritic cells: dendritic cell encounters pathogen, lymphatic system transports pathogen to lymph node. Contains blood supply (for oxygen & waste removal) Blood flows in, collects and flows back out. Found in tissues instead of blood: phagocytes, natural killer cells, anti-microbial proteins, inflammation, fever. Function: detect, engulf, and break up pathogens: phagocytes: Neutrophils & macrophages: signalled to required body parts: releases cytokines, neutrophils 50-70% of white blood cells.
