Rods fill the gap between the s and m cones. But rods are roughly 10 times more sensitive to light (except red) than cones at the high light levels required for cone function, rhodopsin is bleached and rods non- functional. Center and surround receptive fields receive input from different cone populations, usually m and l types: one cone type in center, different cone type in surround, and compete o with one another. Look at differences of activity between cone population. Combinations of m and l inputs, on or off, in center or surround make up most color cell receptive fields. Since s cones are few in number, they are not relegated to a center or surround field. S cone inputs are collected from entire field.
