Females form 1 gamete : males form 4 gametes. Urethra much shorter than men"s: reason women get uti"s much easier. Limited viability of gametes: sperm infinite (entire lifetime, eggs around 51 years after birth (before menopause) Limited number of gametes: sperm infinitely created, eggs number is defined at birth. Fallopian tube (uterine tube): site of fertilization & connection b/w ovary w/ other organs. Contains fimbriae: finger-like projections that catch the egg when it"s released from the ovary. Endometrium: outermost layer of the uterus: responsive to hormones, menstruated every month. Cervix: site of vagina uterus connection & positive feedback for childbirth. Oogonium mitosis oogonia (precursor to oocyte) Oogonia undergo meiosis i before birth becomes primary oocyte: at this stage oocyte development is arrested. Born with 1-2 million primary oocytes (this is the finite number of oocytes women will ever produce) Every 28 days 1 primary oocyte completes meiosis i just before ovulation: here: first polar body disintegrates.
