Document Summary

Peripheral nervous system: anything outside of the cns. Includes neurons with parts in both cns & pns. Autonomic visceral: heart beat, breathing, etc, enteric nervous system nerves lining the gut & intestines control digestion, signals independenty of the brain from the spinal cord. Gray matter: soma & dendrites (unmyelinated structures: exists in layers, clusters (nucleus) White matter: myelinated structures axons: bundles (tracts) Nomenclature: gray matter clusters, cns- nucleus, pns- ganglion, white matter bundles, cns- tracts, pns- nerves. Brain mass = 2% of body mass: gets 15% of blood pumped, uses 50% of glucose, unproportional energy for the size energy hog. Very energy efficient organ (~40 watts light bulb: compared to computers that can do (a fraction of) the brain"s function. To conserve energy only uses about 4% of the brain at any given moment: if the brain doesn"t need to be firing, it won"t.
