PSL201Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Glycerol, Glycogenolysis, Polyuria
Document Summary
What are the me fasted tabolic processes in the fed & state: gluconeogenesis = synthesis of glucose from non- carbohydrate substrates such as glycerol & amino acids, nutrients go into cells, could be broken down; ex. Review question #1: 1 hr after person eaten meal, which do you expect lots of glucose to observe, gluconeogenesis in the liver. Already have: lipolysis in fat cells, protein synthesis in muscle cells, glycogenolysis in the liver. Pancreas near liver, behind stomach, near spline: whitish mass, duct that empties out into duodenum. Islet of langerhans rich in capillaries, endocrine cells scattered throughout pancreas, dif types: beta cells w/i islets- pro-insulin, secrete insulin. Insulin bind to tyrosine kinase rec signal pathway: alpha cells secrete glucagon. Glucagon works thru g prot coupled rec adenylate cyclase camp: delta cells make somatostatin. Insulin & glucagon signal target cells to change gears btwn feeding and fasting metabolism. Insulin-to-glucagon ratio controls glucose homeostasis: relative amts of insulin & glucagon.
