Agenda: what is ideology, left and right, conservatism, liberalism, socialism. A body of ideas that reflects the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, or culture . Canada is pragmatic we subscribe to the conventional wisdom. Ideologies are to reinforce political platforms and undermine opponents: by calling yourself pragmatic you are agreeing with the dominant ideology. Each ideology is a cluster of different principles. Right = individualist belief system: wealthier people, defending entrenched principles, privileges, prerogatives, in favor of wealth system, faith in individual efforts and their achievements, trust people more than the government with their money and as such class. Criteria for classifying political parties as left and right: experts, mp"s values, mp"s socio-economic status (ses, voter support, party finance, voter"s perceptions, party activists" perceptions, party constituents. The castle is not secure unless the cottage is content . Equality: we all start at the same place.
