POL208Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Kenneth Waltz, Immanuel Kant, Intersubjectivity
Document Summary
Social and micro approaches: constructivism and rational choice. Realism 3 s"s (drawn from kenneth waltz: statism only unit that matters/only unit that matters, survival - how states want to increase their security and power. Role as a state is to survive. Need security: military capacity: self-help international system is characterized by anarchy, cooperation is unlikely because of 3 s"s everyone is a security maximizer (self-help) Liberalism: cooperation is possible: traced back to the enlightenment = emmanuel kant, progress is possible, war is not the only answer, conflict is not always what is being avoided, we are trying to get to different common goals. Generally same set of actors (states: repeated interactions encourages states to create institutions. Status quo theories, not revolutionary theories, not saying that another system is possible, they asses the way things are: ex. Marxism is revolutionary, argues for different status quo. Anarchy is the structure of ir: same assumption on what exerts pressure on states.
