Liberalism and democracy are not the same thing. Democracy is about extending power to the people- a radical idea. Liberalism is about limiing the scope of democracy and people. Liberals believe democracy and democraic paricipaion beyond male property owners is radical idea. Believe democracy will lead to redistribuion (liberalism) Classical liberalism: idea of equality before the law. Democracy apposed by liberals as much as monarchy. Liberalism is about seing limits on that power- a conservaive idea. Right and freedom, freedom of press, rule of law. Raional choice theory: people behave raionally; people would not paricipate poliically because it is not raional. The individual will beneit from the provision of the good whether or not they paricipated in creaing the good. Free riders: the people who beneit by not doing anything. Selecive beneits: only get beneit if you paricipate. Expressive beneits: also beneits you get when you paricipate not materialisic (feeling)
