Democracy older than liberalism, but as an ideology, liberalism older than democracy. Liberalism = philosophy, morality, ideology, way of life, poliical regime. A philosophy that : leads to poliical social program, relects beliefs/interests of apoliical system & underlies acion, jusiies poliical/social order. Narrow view ideas in parisan (biased) poliics: ideological = rigid & parisan, liberal as a term of insult. Liberalis: free ppl (liberal edu, liberality (generosity), liberalism (poliically)) Aristotle give individuals tools to do as they please, not teach someone to be someone. Ancient: relies on gov"t to maintain order modern: environment safeguarded from poliical interference. Protestant reformaion: translate bible from lain to common language so priest no longer the middle man, ppl can interpret bible & connect to god themselves: priesthood of all believers, unintended consequence of protestant theology. Against religious conformity: toleraion, freedom of thought & conscience, individual rights & freedoms.
