Document Summary

Parfit: a problem that arises when we think about our obligations to future generations, where our actions can affect who comes into existence in the future. Identity as a logical relation, when we say that a is identical to b. If a is identical to b then a is b: sameness of person. If any particular person had not been conceived within a month of the time when he was in fact conceived, he would in fact never have existed. Some choices affect future people- those who don"t exist currently but will exist in the future. Different number choice: when both number and identities of future people are affected. Same number choices: one in which identities, but not the number, of future people are affected. Same people choice: one in which neither the identities nor number of future people are affected.
