PHL101Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Atheism, Zoroastrianism, Omnipotence
Document Summary
If we are to evaluate whether god exists, then we must evaluate the nature on this supposed god. We will work with the conception known as standard monotheism. The standard monotheistic conception: there exists a unique, supremely perfect being that is the creator of the world. Means that there is one and only one such being. Supreme perfection ? at a minimum, this is typically thought to involve these attributes: omnipotence: being able to do anything it is possible to do, omniscience: being able to know anything it is possible to know. The idea is that god"s not being able to do/know the impossible does not take away from god"s omnipotence/omniscience. The reason is that if something really is impossible, there is nothing there to do/know. God is an agent: omnibenevolence: being morally good to the highest degree. There is some ambiguity in the word morality , this is something to discuss.
