Americans take at least 1 psychatric medication. But we have a crisis in drug innovation when it comes to mental health. Each drug class is filled with me too drugs. 6 s. s. r. i antidepresents - do the same thing. 10 new antipsychotic drugs - all do the same thing. Available drugs leave alot to be desired. Those with schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder dont respond well or cant tolerate side effects. 25% of americans suffer from diagnosable mental illneses but theres no innovation from major drug makers. Companies think that developing new drugs is too risky and too expense. Because of failed clinical trials where new antidepressants or antipsychotics didnt do much better than placebos. 2011 meeting of american society for clinical pharmacology. 13 out of 300 abstracts related to psychopharmacology and none related to novel drugs. They are spending money on cancer, heart disease, diabetes. All antidepressants etc share the same molecular target in the brain since the 1950"s.
