Neglected diseases: affect populations in mainly low income countries, more than 1 billion people suffer from neglected tropical diseases (not including malaria, they are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, directly contribute to poverty in these nations, poor health care infrastructure worsens health outcomes, difficult to assess true burden due to stigma. The big three infectious diseases: receive more attention and $ than neglected diseases, the presence of untreated ntds can worsen health outcomes in those with one or more of the big three diseases, these diseases include: o tuberculosis o malaria o hiv/aids. Lymphatic filariasis: elephantiasis : caused by worms and spread by mosquitoes, worms form nests and block the lymphatic vessels, many people are asymptomatic, swelling in the genital region as well as limbs can occur, lymphatic and kidney damage, ~120 million people are infected with this ntd (africa, asia, western pacific, south america)
