Defined as a feeling of tension that generally occurs due to demanding circumstances. Stress is any organism"s physiological response to a stressor. As we get older, we become value our contribution to society over personal health. Psychological stressors (anticipated challenge, thought of an impending midterm, expectations at work or from family) Unpredictability: something you had no way of knowing it would occur. Threat of ego: competence a s a person is called into question. Sense of control: you feel you have little or no control over situation. Multiple stressors add together to increase stress and risk for illness. Holmes- rahe scale: attempt to quantify risk for illness. Stress initiates a complex series of biological cascades in body. Cascades produce a psychologic state that will help prepare you for that situation. In response to acute stress, two major psychological systems are activated: Acute stress: short successful episode lasting minutes to hours. Associated with many undersiable effects; i. e. heart attack.
