Document Summary

Last class: we discussed qualitative research methods through the walter (2005) and white (2002) readings. Some of the key findings were: use data but with caution/all data can be manipulated. If you torture numbers long enough, they can say anything: rigour is more important than the method in determining quality research. Illusion that quantitative research is closer to the truth and more reliable. Qualitative is considered to be more subjective not necessarily true. White said that both research methods have their own benefits, what matters is how one does research. You have to find a rigorous methodology (quantitative data having people look over, etc. ) (qualitative having interviews, providing results so people can see how you analysed it). Double checking is important regardless of what methodology being used: data has power, to oppress and to empower (reframe the discourse), walter talked a(cid:271)out ho(cid:449) indigenous resear(cid:272)h doesn(cid:859)t use quantitative research methods.
