Established 1st modern style state in me. Created centralized power which was diff from the style of loose elite households of ottomans and mamluks. Introduced conscription and an effective tax system. Marked a qualitative break in the way that egypt was governed. Had empire that included western arabia, syria and sudan. When his ambitions threatened the ottomans, the uk and russia helped to beat so they could be deal with the weak and dependant sultan in istanbul instead of pasha. Uptill late 1820s stayed part of ottomans . Fought the sultans enemies in arabia and fought the wehabies. 1820s sultan called on egyptian force to deal with greece. Ali wanted the syrian area governance as reward but sultan didn"t want him to be too powerful. Centralized resources and revenue w/ objective to have effective army. Till the 20s played role of loyal servant of empire. Used by the empire to defeat webabis in saudi arabia, became governor of the hijaz.
