Document Summary

Quite unusually, the 2nd movement of beethoven"s 9th is fast (molto vivace) still a trio (a contrasting section), replaced minuet (a dance) with a scherzo (italian for joke, the composers inserted jokes to make it light) But beethoven made the scherzo serious and full of manic energy, somewhat grim and demonic that"s the joke - audience expect light and u y, turns out not to be. The transition to the trio is very abrupt. Also argued that it had religious undertones (chorus sings freuda" (joy) and the baritone invites audience to the elysium) Rst exposition is just the exposition, second exposition has exposition, recapitulation, coda etc exposition 1 has horror fanfare (i. e. very scary, stormy fanfare) recitative is a type of writing, that is speech-like and hence makes it sound natural. Then has the joy" theme (the ode to joy) exposition 2 again starts with horror fanfare.
