What defines our metabolic system is how well we do these 2 steps. Bacteria can do this very differently that we do and this allows them to live in places we cant. Both the human and the car engine convert energy, and the energy source is carbon, or organic compounds. Humans just need to perform the reaction in a more conreolled way. We take electrons from atoms that like to give their electrons away. Reducing agents give electrons away, electron grabbing atoms are oxidizing agents. K has 1 valence electron, oxygen has 6 valence electrons, and it wants 2 more for a fullll orbital. A negative number means hat the reverse reaction is favourable. In eukaryotic cells, the etcs are in the mitochondria, in bacterial cells they are in the cytoplasm. In each of these steps, we push h to the ohtsiede of the e zme, and we then use the h gradient to convert adp to atp.
