Principles of control: decontamination, reduce pathogens to levels considered safe to handle, sterilization, removal or destruction of all microorganisms (doesn"t consider prions, includes endospores and viruses, disinfection. Elimination of all or most pathogens: disinfectants on inanimate things, antiseptics on living, sanitization. Chlorine: oxidize, destroys all proteins, cellular parts microbes and viruses. Very low levels to disinfect drinking water (cannot kill. Giardia cysts: caustic to skin and mucous membranes. Iodine: oxidize, kills vegetative, not reliable on proteins, cellular parts, used as iodophore (slow release from carrier) commonly. Phenolic compound: destroy membranes, denature protein, inhibits synthesis of fa"s, can be used in soaps, lotions, toothpaste. Quats special chamber (like autoclave) in 3-12 hours but gas must be removed by heated forced air. Positively charged attracts them to negative charge of cell: most household soaps are negatively charged, disinfect food prep surfaces, applied in cells.
