Lecture 3: water and electrolytes. Makes up thr plasma = 3. 5 l. Interstitial fluid = 10. 5l fluid between cells. There is movement, fluid does not just sit there but goes between each of these compartments. There"s a membrane that separates icf and ecf so fluid. Does go back and forth there in normal and disease state. Between plasma and isf, there is also movement where water goes in and out of vessels. There is a set point body tries to adjust water level to some kind of set point. Set point regulated by the inputs and outputs. Input: drinking, food, iv. Can be deranged when disease take over. Output: water loss through other. Anions all measured in plasma/serum. Concentration: amount of solute in given volume of solvent. An absolute amount/a particular volume. E. g. mmol/l, g/l, etc. Osmolality: amount of solute particles in a given weight of solvent independent of size and charge. Measurement of plasma osmolality.
