Document Summary

Lin204h1 week 1 chapters 1 & 2. Grammar the linguisic system that exists in the mind of a speaker. The system that gives speakers the sense that they know their language: what sounds the language uses to make words, what possible words are in that language and what they mean, what possible sentences are in that language. * onify (on-ify) to put something on something. We explain this diference by describing the properies of the suix ify. There is clearly a rule that governs what kind of base the suix ify can atach to. The word onify violates a rule of english grammar because it is an ungrammaical word in english. Prescripive -> prescribe = recommend, advise, authorize the use of something. Descripive -> describe = give an account of the characterisics of something. Descripive approach: who are you speaking to? (common, every day english); also to whom are you speaking? (formal)
