Document Summary
The immune system is a system of tissues, cells and soluble products that recognize, attack and destroy entitities that can potentially endanger our health. Pathogens fall into four major cateogories: viruses, parasites, bacteria, fungi. Immune responses are tailored to the type of pathogen. More than just killing the infected cell, but also containing and eliminating the pathogen. The immune system must recognize and respond to internal threats. Entry of a pathogen > reocognition > response > return to resting. Innate immunity rapid response (hours), leading to a xed response, not highly speci c, and does not improve . Adaptive immunity slow response (days to weeks), leading to a variable response, which is highly speci c, and improves during the course of the response . Both immune responses lead to the destruction of pathogens. Immunitas = to be exempt from originally described exemption from public service or state control .
