Lecture 1: monday, may 12, 2014: part of royal society. Galileo galilei: started off as a university professor teach mathematics, published dialogue concerning the two chief world systems in 1632. Contributed: defended the idea that the earth goes around the sun: height of his career, he entertained princes with books, arguments meant to blow minds, invented telescope and pointed to jupiter. University systems, like the one galileo worked in, did produce pretty interesting people like kepler. Contributed: kepler worked out that the orbits of the planets were not circles, but ellipses.
