Document Summary

Lecture 6: imaging the impact of stroke in children. Leading cause of cerebral palsy in children carried to term. Mri can be used for many purposes: diagnosing, assessing structure (dti, assessing function (fmri, assessing permeability (dynamic contrast imaging dce) Plasticity: refers to the ability of brain to change. Changes adapting to injury: stroke is an injury to the brain. Alli"s right hand squeeze: neurological view from the front (left hemisphere activated) In perinatal and adult stroke, there is bi-hemisphere activation/recruitment. In stroke patients, there is less structural integrity in the tracts. Poor outcome decreased fa values cst (lower the integrity, the higher the volume of fmri activations) A big gap in understanding mechanisms of stroke in the developing brain. There is a delay to diagnosis in children: rat model of stroke: No studies that test the safety of drugs and interventions known to work in adult stroke therefore safety is unknown.
