Document Summary
Sex and gender: what is male/female there are many ways to how you can define what sex and gender are since appearance doesn"t simply gauge male and female. The female is always the one that produces the egg (large gamete) which leads to the development of the embryo. The animal that makes the smaller gamete is the male. Gamete production cannot be determined until puberty, when reproductive maturity has arrived. Chromosomes : xx, xy (xo, xxy, xyy) The male will always have the y chromosome present it determines the differentiation of the genitalia. There are exceptions with chromosomes and diseases. At the time of birth, the doctor will examine external genitalia and declare gender: hormones (androgen and estrogens) Sexual differentiation: y chromosome sry gene. This is the critical factor in producing gene differences, the sry gene on the y chromosome.
