Document Summary

Violence began as early as the early 1920s with the end of ottoman rule and the establishment of the british mandate. There were also riots towards the end of the decade, mainly in hebron, sefad, tiberias, jerusalem, and jaffa, among others. In general, however, the 1920s as a whole were quiet. After the riots of 1929, the british tried to withdraw from the balfour declaration. As a result of zionist pressure, however, they continued their support of the jewish national home. The intention had been to restrict immigration, but the zionists convinced them to back off of this idea. In the 1930 the con ict intensi ed and led to the end of the british mandate. Events outside of palestine, especially in the 1930s, had a strong in uence on what happened in palestine. The nazis rose to power in germany in 1933, for one, and the persecution of german jews began in 1935 with the nuremberg laws.
