Document Summary
Both sides paid a heavy price for the civil war, with large casualty numbers collectively adding up to. The north at least had the triumph over the south and the emancipation proclamation as consolation. The south however doesn"t have much to show for the losses, with 1/10th of the south"s white male population dead. Each of the confederate states were heavily damaged with massive areas of cities and countryside in ruin. About 1 billion dollars in damage had been done in terms of destroyed homes, plantations and businesses. The millions invested in slavery was taken away without compensation. The south"s way of life centered on the institution of slavery had been taken away. However the lives of former slaves is still full of certainty. They now have to stand on their own with nothing but the clothes on their back and no financial means to sustain themselves.
