As far as the 60s were concerned, the civil rights movement began in february, 1960, when four black students walked into woolworth"s and sat at an all-white counter. Woolworth"s closed early that day to ease discomfort. The next day, they came back with 20 other friends. By the end of the week, 1000s of young adults some white allies went to. Similar protests erupted in dozens of other states. This tactic of just showing up and being polite and peaceable proved enough to get desegregation starting in certain businesses. By easter weekend, the student non-violent coordinating committee (sncc) was formed. Their goal was to coordinate these events to have more weight and meaning behind them.
